A Mother's Day Letter

I remember going to a Mother’s Day gathering three years ago and welling up with tears, it was a Mother’s Day that also fell on Ella’s birthday. We hadn’t yet met her, we were supposed to have had her by that point, but something on the Indian side went wrong and our adoption was delayed for about five months. Mother’s Day that year wasn’t easy, we had been fighting for our daughter for over two years, and I was tired. I remember asking David to please figure out a way to get me a picture of her, so he screenshot a couple of our latest videos from the orphanage and framed the stills since he couldn’t get a picture from them in time - he always knows how to bless and give well.

For some, Mother’s Day is a day to go out, for others it’s just another day with a little extra heartache. This one’s for all the mom’s who have lost a child, longed for a child, lost a mom/grandma/mentor, to all those who have longed to hold “just one more”. This is also for all the moms who have done it another way - the foster parents, adoptive moms, aunts, friends, sisters, the ones who have stepped in to love a broken heart, the mentors, volunteers… this one’s for you, because you’re a means of grace to a fallen world. God put you here, don’t lose sight of that. If you wish you had one to hold, my heart is for you - but don’t miss out on the one’s that see you as irreplaceable. You are loved and celebrated, too - Happy Mother’s Day beloved.
